The Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA) is looking for two energetic, creative, innovative people for internships at our office in Johannesburg. The positions will afford access to a wide network in the visual arts sector and provide an excellent opportunity for on-the-job training and development for people interested in arts management, administration and networking. The VANSA internship programme is made possible with the support of Africalia, and includes eight other interns located in visual arts organisations across the country.

The organisation is expanding its work in the Gauteng region, and we are particularly looking for people who would be interested in longer term engagement with the organisation. While each of the internships have a distinct set of tasks and outcomes associated with it (outlined below), the interns will be expected to be an integral part of a small team implementing a variety of national and regional projects. These include research, networking events, producing on-line and printed professional development resources, convening workshops, and producing creative projects. Skills/knowledge in any of these areas will be an advantage.

Successful candidates should be creative, highly motivated people with the following basic skills set and aptitudes:

o Computer literate

o Writing skills

o Communication skills

o A capacity to organise, prioritise and manage own time effectively

The Internships will involve a 2.5 day per week commitment for a six month period initially, from mid June 2010 – December 2010, and will be remunerated at approximately R3,500.00 per month. This time can be allocated flexibly within a well-planned framework.

Office Administration Intern

The internship will be focussed around a variety of practical tasks involved in running a small arts organisation effectively - from answering the phone and collecting the post through to purchasing office supplies, financial record-keeping, writing reports and maintaining a stimulating office environment. The internship will involve developing an understanding of finance, legal issues, fundraising, report-writing and the overall management of the organisation.

Projects and Networking Events Intern

The intern will work with a small team in developing innovative approaches to the effective engagement of the visual arts sector in Gauteng in the activities of the organisation. The intern will assist in ensuring regular and targeted communication with VANSA membership and stakeholders as well as assisting in coordinating effective marketing, communication and media plans for projects.
