Report for end of 2011 VANSA WC

VANSA Western Cape has had a busy year along with some changes. We kicked off with our Spring School in January with the online/website workshop. Our second workshop was the ever popular Professional Practice hosted by Artsource JHB. This was followed by an In-Focus workshop focusing on artists’ creativity which was so popular we ran it three times.

Our mentorship programme started at the end of February with 8 students who committed to a three month course facilitated by Vuyile Voyiya with theory lectures from Janet Ransen.
We held a Curatorial Workshop hosted by Claudia Stemberger – an independent curator and writer from Austria as well as a mould-making/sculpture week-long course held at the Ruth Prowse School of Art and facilitated by Brendhan Dickerson.

Our vice-chairman, Athi-Patra Ruga, held a series of ‘conversations’ presented by various inter-disciplinary artists on the last Wednesday evening of the month.
Sadly, our director, Peter Hayes, left us at the end of May to pursue his theatrical passion. We took on two new interns Ruarc Peffers and Monique Pelser both with degrees in fine art who have contributed greatly to the organisation.

We’ve had a few exhibitions in our Spin Street Gallery which has been upgraded with new lighting and a new ‘fourth’ white wall to make it a white cube. We also ran a hugely successful Art Collector’s course with phenomenal speakers such as Sean O’Toole, Andrew Lamprecht, Clive Kellner among others, over a series of 8 weeks which we hope to run again in 2012.

Please note that VANSA WC office will be closed between 15 December 2011 - 9 January 2012.
