Library of the infinitesimally small and the unimaginably large A solo exhibition by Barbara Wildenboer
Edmann Contemporary and The Photographers Gallery za is proud to host Barbara Wildenboer’s second solo exhibition Library of the infinitesimally small and the unimaginably large. Wildenboer is a conceptualist working with paper construction and altered books. Exhibition closes 21 May 2011
Books are shown moving, crumpling, and unfolding. The written word is literally brought to life through animation, sculpture and photography. The work explores the interconnectedness of living things: flowers meet scientific textbooks, meet the digital echoes of a bird in an ecology of paper and technology.
For this exhibition books were chosen not only for their physical characteristics
but more specifically for their subject matter. Reference material such as encyclopedias,
atlases and scientific textbooks are used as objects to be transformed. These are all
sources which are linked by the subject matter of fractal geometry. The exhibition
is the butterfly effect at work: the tiniest actions have unimaginably large consequences.
Wildenboer lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa.
