AVA, the Association for Visual Arts
-
The Association For Visual Arts (AVA) Gallery in partnership with Spier, 35 Church Street, Cape Town, is one of Cape Town’s oldest non-profit art galleries, showcasing contemporary South African art in all media.
-
The gallery has been situated in these premises, in the heart of the city centre, since 1971, first as the Metropolitan Gallery, and then in partnership with Spier, who recently bought the building from Metropolitan. Run by the energetic Estelle Jacobs, the AVA usually hosts three exhibitions at a time, with many young contemporary artists making their debut here.
AVA’s main priority and objective is the promotion and advancement of visual art and artists in South Africa, with particular emphasis on artists from the Western Cape, both established and emerging, formally trained and self-taught.
AVA achieves this goal in several ways. Firstly, AVA hosts exhibitions which change every four weeks. This means that our space is never without an exhibition. An artist does not need to be a member of AVA to hold an exhibition here. All work exhibited goes through a selection procedure. AVA has a selection panel who meet every two months. Any artist who wishes to exhibit at AVA must bring in works on the day of the selection meeting for the panel to review. Their decision is made by majority vote. No feedback is given and their decision is final. It should be noted that being a member of AVA does not guarantee an artist an exhibition here. As the gallery space is divided into four sections, four exhibitions can be held simultaneously and these four shows all share one opening function.

Brundyn + Gonsalves (Previously iArt Gallery)
-
Brundyn + Gonsalves (Previously iArt Gallery) was established with the intention of creating an institution that serves as both a visual and cultural indicator for collectors, as well as a forum for contemporary artists to exhibit their work.
-
Brundyn + Gonsalves strives to maintain the highest possible artistic and intellectual standards. Artworks by some of South Africa’s most prominent contemporary artists can be viewed alongside works by promising, young talent.
Brundyn + Gonsalves Gallery is pleased to have opened a Gallery at Wembley: A Project Room for Contemporary Art in September 2009. In addition to the double storey gallery in Loop Street, which has a much more traditional feel to it, the smaller space at Wembley Square will be a supplementary exhibition and project venue. As a ‘project room’, iArt Gallery Wembley offers us a myriad of exciting opportunities to expand our reach and give our clients insight into more experimental and collaborative realms of South African art, without having to compromise or stray from the already well-established identity developed at and maintained by our Loop Street premises.

The Stellenbosch Modern and Contemporary (SMAC) Art Gallery
-
The Stellenbosch Modern and Contemporary (SMAC) Art Gallery officially opened in November 2006 on the first floor of the renovated De Wet Centre in Stellenbosch as one of largest commercial exhibition spaces in the Western Cape.
-
Since then, the gallery has earned acclaim for successfully hosting a series of thought-provoking exhibitions accompanied by well researched publications.
SMAC Art Gallery is primarily concerned with the significance of historical and contemporary art movements in South Africa such as the modernist abstract era, the protest era and the neglected contribution of African artists in the post-war period. The gallery therefore aims to provide a platform to continually present exhibitions that assist in the process of reviewing and revising South African art. To date SMAC has published more than ten art catalogues and books. Recent exhibition highlights include Revisions +: Expanding the Narrative of South African Art, Abstract South African Art from the Isolation Years: Part III, the large mid-career retrospectives of the artists Anton Karstel and Wayne Barker, as well as a major retrospective exhibition of renowned artist Erik Laubscher.
SMAC is also committed to expanding South Africa’s participation and contact with the international art community. In 2009 the gallery facilitated and sponsored the participation of three artists; Wayne Barker, Kay Hassan and Johann Louw in an official collateral exhibition to the 53rd Venice Biennale entitled; Praise of Nature-Languages of the World. Another SMAC artist, Jake Aikman was also represented in a prestigious collateral exhibition to the Biennale entitled L’Anima Dell Acqua / The Spirit of Water. Subsequently, SMAC has been active in championing the return of South Africa in an official capacity to the Venice Biennale.
The gallery currently represents more than twenty established, contemporary and emerging artists and continues with an exciting, innovative and high profile programme of exhibitions and projects both locally and abroad.
The gallery expanded in 2009 by opening SMAC Space Stellenbosch and the SMAC Art Gallery Showroom in Cape Town. Both venues allow SMAC the freedom to engage in different projects that run concurrently with larger exhibitions in the main gallery.
