Red Marker Goodman Gallery (Cape Town)
Contemporary Gallery . International Exchange

Founded in 1966 by Linda Givon, the gallery has major spaces in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and also recently opened a Project Space at Arts on Main in the Johannesburg CBD. The Project Space is intended as an experimental space for younger and emerging artists, and for special projects and installations. An additional gallery space has been opened in Cape Town along the newly developed Woodstock arts strip. In Cape Town the gallery is also represented at the One & Only Hotel on the V & A Waterfront.

Under the direction of Liza Essers, the Goodman Gallery aims to exhibit, support and promote contemporary art that is engaged, courageous, and provocative. The gallery’s focus is on artists from South Africa and the greater African continent, as well as artists from further afield whose work engages in a dialogue with the African context. The gallery also aims to broaden its publishing programme through the production of high-quality books and limited editions.

For more than a decade, Goodman Gallery has been the only South African gallery at the world’s premier art fair, Art Basel, and has in recent years also exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach, the Armory Show in New York, Paris Photo and the Joburg Art Fair. Multiple ongoing collaborations have also been launched. In October 2009, the Goodman Gallery collaborated with Air de Paris, Galleria Continua, Galerie Krinzinger, Kamel Mennour, Galerie Almine Rech, and Esther Schipper Berlin to present Sphères, at Le Moulin, France.

Red Marker Centre for Historical Re-Enactments
International Exchange, Project Space, Seminars, Public Art.
The Center for Historical Reenactments (CHR) is a Johannesburg based independent platform, founded by artist and curator Gabi Ngcobo. CHR sets out to look at history to investigate how, within a particular historical hegemony, certain values have been created, promoted and subsequently sublated into a broader universal discourse. CHR aims to respond to the immediate demands of the current moment through an exploration into the historical legacies and their resonance and impact on contemporary art. Through exhibitions, events and seminars, by engaging local (South African) and international practitioners, the Center aims to raise questions about the political potentials of artistic interpretations of histories.

Red Marker Keiskamma Art Project
Development Organisation . Craft . International Exchange

The Keiskamma Art Project was created in 2000 by medical doctor and fine artist Carol Hofmeyr, with the help of Jan Chalmers (Oxford, UK) and Jackie Jezewski (Brantome, France). Carol began teaching arts and crafts to a handful of women who began by collecting the plastic bags that littered the village. They crocheted them into hats and bags. From those humble beginnings the Art Project has grown to become the place where Art and Health interject to create meaning and hope to a population struggling from decades of abuse and poverty. The Art Project is the flagship of the Keiskamma Trust and represents the work of the Trust on the world-stage through its Monumental Artworks, as in Toronto for the the 2006 International Aids conference and in Durban for the Make Art/Stop AIDS exhibition co-curated by David Gere and Carol Brown.

We have developed five Art Studios specialising in Beading, Felt-making, embroideries, ceramics and printmaking. Today the Art Project is running successfully under the leadership of twelve local managers and group leaders. Assisting and training them is Florence Danais, Art History Lecturer and graduate in Arts and Culture Management. Together they work with 130 artists and crafters to create quality art and craft works, generating much-needed income to improve the quality of life in Hamburg and surroundings.

Red Marker SABC Collection
Corporate Collection
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has been acquiring art works informally for more than half a century. Following the restructuring of the corporation in 1994, the art collection was formalised under a curator and funds were allocated for the acquisition of works representative of South Africa's new democracy. During the past 10 years, a primary concern has been to acquire work by black artists and other artists previously under-represented in the collection.

Red Marker Serialworks
Project Space . International Exchange

Serialworks is a project of artistic, academic, critic and curator Kathryn Smith, based in Woodstock Cape Town. Serialworks is the name under which Smith has practiced as a curator, researcher and editor since 2001. In 2009 she secured a suitable physical space which matched an ongoing frustration with how we consider the various registers of where art is made, displayed and discussed. The possibility of creating a modest alternative to gallery display – and the demands associated with that option – became viable.

Red Marker Oliewenhuis Art Museum
Oliewenhuis Art Museum is still a relatively young museum even by South African standards. Being only 13 years old, the Museum has shown a steady and interesting growth in its collection.

The permanent collection, which is frequently rearranged, is housed on the first floor and is devoted exclusively to works produced by South African artists. It has a solid foundation of early South African artists, and includes works by Thomas Baines, Jan Ernst Volschenk, Pieter Wenning, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef and Willem Coetzer. The Museum is still in the fortunate position to be able to continually expand on its collection of contemporary South African artists.

A considerable number of works have been acquired through donations and bequests; outstanding among these is a collection of works from the City Council of Bloemfontein. This collection, which was ceded to Oliewenhuis Art Museum at its inception in 1989, together with art works from the National Museum’s permanent collection, formed the nucleus for the future Art Museum worthy of the Provincial capital. A large collection of works donated by the Haenngi Foundation (as a result of the demise of the Pelindaba Museum of African and Modern Art) has assisted the Museum in building a core collection representing works of some of South Africa’s most celebrated artists.

Red Marker William Humphreys Art Gallery
The William Humphreys Art Gallery, situated in Kimberley's Civic Centre, is considered one of the finest art museums in South Africa. It was opened in 1952 and named after its principal benefactor, William Benbow Humphreys (1889 - 1965).

In 1948 William Humphreys donated to the city a substantial portion of his personal collection of 16th and 17th Century Dutch and Flemish Old Masters, British and French paintings, antique furniture and other objects d'art.

This gift combined with the South African works of art brought together by members of the Art Section of the Kimberley Athenaeum and The Max Greenberg Bequest formed the nucleus of the collection. The Humphreys Loan Collection and Timlin Collection on indefinite loan from De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, augment it. More recently the Meyer Collection of European and Oriental Porcelain and the Lawson Collection of Old Master Drawings and Prints have been acquired.

At present the Art Gallery concentrates on collecting South African works of art. Apart from its primary function as a museum of art, this Gallery serves the community as an educational and cultural centre. Its activities include temporary exhibitions, art workshops mainly for children, development stimulation classes for pre-school children, craft workshops for unemployed women, lectures, video shows and concerts. We also have a successful outreach programme in which we take graphic exhibitions to the small towns of the Northern Cape province where learners are exposed to world of art. Guided tours are arranged on request.

Red Marker Ifa Lethu Foundation
Ifa Lethu, a nonprofit Foundation based in Tshwane, South Africa is devoted to the development and economic growth of the creative sectors in the country.

Through the intervention of former Australian diplomats, Diane Johnstone and Bruce Haigh and the Australian High Commission in South Africa and the South African Ministry of Arts and Culture, the Foundation was launched in November 2005, by the then Minister of Arts and Culture, the Honourable Dr. Z. Pallo Jordan. The original aim of the Foundation was to repatriate South African struggle-era cultural heritage such as art and art objects back into the country.

Ifa Lethu today manages the largest heritage repatriation effort in South Africa with collections having been repatriated from countries such as the United States of America, Canada, France, Australia, Spain, Holland, the United Kingdom and Germany. Further collections have been identified across the globe and every endeavour is made by Ifa Lethu to facilitate their repatriation to their home country. Ifa Lethu thanks all its generous donors who make this possible.

Recent activities marked a rapid growth and an extension of our mandate, which has resulted in the Foundation focusing on the provision of skills for creative practitioners so they may become successful entrepreneurs. This extension has allowed the foundation to align its work with the national priorities of poverty alleviation and community upliftment. While Repatriation, education and outreach of heritage remain the core business of the Foundation, the development aspect has been fully incorporated into our work. This was guided by the lessons harnessed over the last two years, and by the recognition of current challenges that plague the heritage and creative sectors.

It was also guided by our research which pointed to the lack of available and related skills in this sector and the failure to use heritage to empower communities and create a more entrepreneurial society in South Africa, thus contributing to the economic development of the country. Headed by CEO Dr. Narissa Ramdhani and Chaired by Dr. Mamphela Ramphele, the Ifa Lethu Foundation has, through its sophisticated training programmes developed creative entrepreneurs and reated markets for them nationally and internationally. Red Marker AVA, the Association for Visual Arts
The Association For Visual Arts (AVA) Gallery in partnership with Spier, 35 Church Street, Cape Town, is one of Cape Town’s oldest non-profit art galleries, showcasing contemporary South African art in all media.

The gallery has been situated in these premises, in the heart of the city centre, since 1971, first as the Metropolitan Gallery, and then in partnership with Spier, who recently bought the building from Metropolitan. Run by the energetic Estelle Jacobs, the AVA usually hosts three exhibitions at a time, with many young contemporary artists making their debut here.

AVA’s main priority and objective is the promotion and advancement of visual art and artists in South Africa, with particular emphasis on artists from the Western Cape, both established and emerging, formally trained and self-taught.

AVA achieves this goal in several ways. Firstly, AVA hosts exhibitions which change every four weeks. This means that our space is never without an exhibition. An artist does not need to be a member of AVA to hold an exhibition here. All work exhibited goes through a selection procedure. AVA has a selection panel who meet every two months. Any artist who wishes to exhibit at AVA must bring in works on the day of the selection meeting for the panel to review. Their decision is made by majority vote. No feedback is given and their decision is final. It should be noted that being a member of AVA does not guarantee an artist an exhibition here. As the gallery space is divided into four sections, four exhibitions can be held simultaneously and these four shows all share one opening function.

Red Marker Brundyn + Gonsalves (Previously iArt Gallery)
Brundyn + Gonsalves (Previously iArt Gallery) was established with the intention of creating an institution that serves as both a visual and cultural indicator for collectors, as well as a forum for contemporary artists to exhibit their work.

Brundyn + Gonsalves strives to maintain the highest possible artistic and intellectual standards. Artworks by some of South Africa’s most prominent contemporary artists can be viewed alongside works by promising, young talent.

Brundyn + Gonsalves Gallery is pleased to have opened a Gallery at Wembley: A Project Room for Contemporary Art in September 2009. In addition to the double storey gallery in Loop Street, which has a much more traditional feel to it, the smaller space at Wembley Square will be a supplementary exhibition and project venue. As a ‘project room’, iArt Gallery Wembley offers us a myriad of exciting opportunities to expand our reach and give our clients insight into more experimental and collaborative realms of South African art, without having to compromise or stray from the already well-established identity developed at and maintained by our Loop Street premises.

Red Marker The Stellenbosch Modern and Contemporary (SMAC) Art Gallery
The Stellenbosch Modern and Contemporary (SMAC) Art Gallery officially opened in November 2006 on the first floor of the renovated De Wet Centre in Stellenbosch as one of largest commercial exhibition spaces in the Western Cape.

Since then, the gallery has earned acclaim for successfully hosting a series of thought-provoking exhibitions accompanied by well researched publications.

SMAC Art Gallery is primarily concerned with the significance of historical and contemporary art movements in South Africa such as the modernist abstract era, the protest era and the neglected contribution of African artists in the post-war period. The gallery therefore aims to provide a platform to continually present exhibitions that assist in the process of reviewing and revising South African art. To date SMAC has published more than ten art catalogues and books. Recent exhibition highlights include Revisions +: Expanding the Narrative of South African Art, Abstract South African Art from the Isolation Years: Part III, the large mid-career retrospectives of the artists Anton Karstel and Wayne Barker, as well as a major retrospective exhibition of renowned artist Erik Laubscher.

SMAC is also committed to expanding South Africa’s participation and contact with the international art community. In 2009 the gallery facilitated and sponsored the participation of three artists; Wayne Barker, Kay Hassan and Johann Louw in an official collateral exhibition to the 53rd Venice Biennale entitled; Praise of Nature-Languages of the World. Another SMAC artist, Jake Aikman was also represented in a prestigious collateral exhibition to the Biennale entitled L’Anima Dell Acqua / The Spirit of Water. Subsequently, SMAC has been active in championing the return of South Africa in an official capacity to the Venice Biennale.

The gallery currently represents more than twenty established, contemporary and emerging artists and continues with an exciting, innovative and high profile programme of exhibitions and projects both locally and abroad.

The gallery expanded in 2009 by opening SMAC Space Stellenbosch and the SMAC Art Gallery Showroom in Cape Town. Both venues allow SMAC the freedom to engage in different projects that run concurrently with larger exhibitions in the main gallery.

Red Marker Gugulective
International Exchange . Project Space . Emerging Artists
Gugulective is a collective of artists who share a common set of interests around the position of the contemporary arts in an urban township context. Gugulective originated in 2006 out of the desire to create a place for artistic and intellectual exchange outside the mainstream: a space for ideas and art underpinned by the hope of inciting processes of interaction and change in a politically and socially disadvantaged environment. Gugulective often involves various communities and, above all, young people in its projects. Members include Unathi Sigenu, Kemang Wa Lehulure and Lonwabo Kilani. Gugulective creates exhibits, installations, performances, video screenings, community discussions in the midst of a community far from the art galleries of Cape Town. Gugulective is based at the KwaMlamli shebeen, is a gathering place where everyone gathers to learn from one another.

Red Marker Keleketla!
Project Space . Residency . International Exchange . Public Art . Media Arts

Keleketla! is a Pedi word which functions as a response to the beginning of a story, a signal that one is attentive and engaged. It is some kind of an acknowledgement and a consent that ‘I am here, willing to listen to your story with active participation’. Keleketla community resource centre started in February 2008 as Keleketla! Library as a once off collaboration between Bettina Malcomess, the innacitycommunity collective and the Joubert Park Project artists collective. The library is a quiet space in the middle of the noise of Johannesburg that provides access to cultural resources and a forum in which to respond to them. Its aim is to begin to foster cultural literacy through encouraging personal, free engagement with books, art, music and film. Keleketla! Works with both local ad international artists on projects which are shaped around the space and people of the inner city of Johannesburg.

Red Marker Southern Guild/Source
At the 2010 Joburg Art Fair, the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) has partnered with Artlogic and Source in the realization of the Southern Guild Design Space. The initiative identifies and brings together iconic and innovative design pieces from South Africa's creative industries.

International interest in South African art and design is growing, and is bringing with it an increased demand for local creative product. The dti celebrates entrepreneurship and ingenuity, and by partnering with Southern Guild, aims to increase international market access as well as export and trade opportunities for South Africa's pioneers of design.

The dti sees its support of premier local design as an ongoing concern. Looking to the future, the dti hopes to develop and inform its partnership with Southern Guild so that the collaboration may ultimately extend beyond our borders and into the global arena.

Making its debut at the Joburg Art Fair in 2009 Southern Guild received an overwhelming response, both publically and critically, for the diverse and original collection of design products inspired by nature.

For the 2010 collection, this year's forty selected exhibitors are again a group of the countries leading contemporary designers, collaborating artists and the most interesting up and coming young design talents. The focus is on new materials, and exploring a very contemporary aesthetic, as they launch 'one of a kind pieces,' limited editions and their new ranges.

Red Marker Greatmore Studio
Greatmore Studios forms part of the Triangle Arts Trust, a United Kingdom based organisation that initiates and facilitates an international network of artist-led workshops and residencies. This association affords artists access to information and opportunities to exchange ideas and skills with other artists around the world.

Greatmore, and its workshop initiative, Thupelo, grew out of the first Triangle Arts Trust workshop held in New York in 1982. It follows the Triangle model of providing studios and residencies, facilitating workshops, and supporting outreach programmes to raise awareness of art. Exhibitions, workshop open days and public events provide platforms for engaging audiences and introducing the latest works of new and established artists to local and international audiences.

Greatmore Studios is an artists-run initiative. The committee and director work closely with an administrative team and accountant.
Resident artists are required to participate in outreach programmes. These activities range from slide shows and workshops to lectures and presentations at various local institutions and schools in both urban and rural communities.

All artists in residence at Greatmore, whether local or international, are required to exhibit their work in an Greatmore's gallery space during their stay.

In addition to being provided with administrative support, artists benefit from Greatmore’s digital programme. Through this programme, artists have unlimited access to the internet, enabling them to keep up to date with events, including exhibitions, residencies and competitions. The programme also includes training courses in selected applications and assistance in building websites.
Today the studio brings together artists from diverse cultural and national backgrounds under one working environment.

Red Marker Bag Factory
Residency, Emerging artists, International exchange, Project space, Workshops, Emerging Artists, Production.

For over a decade, the Bag Factory have been running workshops and residencies with the aim of stimulating creative exchange with artists from the rest of South Africa, Africa and other parts of the world. Our residency programme is related to the work of the Triangle Arts Trust, an international network of artists’ collectives, residencies and workshop programmes. As with the Triangle Arts Trust initiatives, artists are encouraged to develop their practice in a climate of cultural diversity. This focus motivates artists to make a creative and innovative contribution to the cultural development of the communities in which they live and work. The residency programme enables artists to spend time working in Johannesburg and, over the past few years, has built for itself a formidable international reputation. Artists from as far afield as Sao Paulo, Nairobi, Zurich, Delhi and Montreal have visited the Bag Factory and hold it in high esteem. Many artists from South Africa have in return visited countries abroad and have benefited from this experience. Apart from producing their own work, visiting artists engage with the local artists resident at the Bag Factory. At the end of their period of residency, they hold open studios and a public exhibition.

Red Marker Market Photo Workshop
Education/Training . Project Space . International Exchange . Seminars/Forums

The Market Photo Workshop was started by world-renowned photographer David Goldblatt in the late eighties. At the outset, the aim was to provide visual literacy and practical training to young photographers who were excluded from formal training in tertiary education institutions by the policies of the government at the time. Located in Newtown, Johannesburg, the Market Photo Workshop strives to create an environment where students learn not only the technical and conceptual aspects of photography, but also the thinking integral to the understanding of contemporary photographic practice.
Through its various endeavours and ongoing projects the Market Photo Workshop continues to make strong links with organisations both locally and internationally.  The Market Photo Workshop has played a crucial role in establishing new voices in South African photography. Alumni include: Jodi Bieber (seven times World Press Winner), other World Press winners like Themba Hadebe, and Sydney Seshibedi; and internationally acclaimed photographers such as Nontsikelelo Veleko and Zanele Muholi.

Red Marker The South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA)
SANAVA is the oldest, constitutionally established, most representative, national non-governmental association for the promotion of the visual arts in South Africa, its origin dating back to 1851 when the Cape Fine Arts Society (CFAS) was established.

Over the years, the Society has grown to become a national body of artists and lovers of the visual arts. The organisation proved its resilience despite several war-time situations and challenges of an economic, financial, social and political nature.

Several name changes were due to follow: in 1871 it became the South African Fine Arts Association (SAFAA), in 1945 the South African Association of Arts (SAAA), and in 1998 the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA). Despite the name changes, the Association basically retained the same objectives as reflected in the original Constitution, that of promoting the visual arts in its widest context. One of SANAVA’s major objectives concerning the development of artists relates to the administration of three fully equipped artists’ studios, in the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France. These were acquired during the early 1990s in terms of an occupational rights agreement, valid till 2060.

SANAVA is an overall administrative body, serving autonomous branches and affiliated organisations (art galleries, museums, educational institutions and corporate bodies providing for the promotion of the visual arts) country-wide.

Presently, the Association comprises 26 branches and 19 affiliated organisations, including two academic institutions in Mozambique (the National School of Visual Arts of Mozambique and the Portuguese School of Mozambique, both in Maputo). Its Constitution does not allow for individual artists directly to become members of the national association. They have to be members of a branch that is a member of the national body.

SANAVA is registered with the Department of Social Development as a Non-profit Organisation as well as with the South African Revenue Service as a Public Benefit Organisation. Although the SAAA (earlier name of SANAVA) had been a founding member of the International Association of Art (IAA) in 1954, it became a dormant member in later years. On 24 September 2005, at the 16th General Assembly of the IAA held in China, SANAVA was readmitted as a member of that non-governmental world body, closely associated with UNESCO.

Constitution

Approved and adopted at the Annual General Meeting on 2 October 1998, and amended at Annual General Meetings on 23 April 2004, 21 April 2006 and 27 April 2007.

Sanava: A member of the IAA

The South African Association of Arts (SAAA), earlier name of the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), was a founding member of the International Association of Art (IAA)/Association Internationale des Arts Plastiques (AIAP). The IAA is a non-governmental world body run by and for visual artists in every medium, style and tradition. It was founded in 1954 under the auspices of UNESCO. Artists from countries worldwide are represented by their national committees. At the 1st General Assembly of the IAA, held in Venice from 28 September to 3 October 1954, the SAAA was represented by an established visual artist, Walter Battiss. He was elected as a member of the organisation’s first Executive Committee, together with representatives from Brazil, USA, Yugoslavia, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Japan and Sweden.

The principal objectives of the IAA are:

  • to stimulate international co-operation, free from any aesthetic, political or other bias, among artists of all countries;
  • to improve the economic and social position of artists at the international level, and to defend their material and moral rights; and
  • to co-operate with UNESCO in the field of the visual arts.

At some or other stage during the apartheid era, the SAAA became a dormant member of the IAA. On 24 September 2005, at the 16th General Assembly of the IAA held in Beijing, China, this valuable relationship was rekindled, when SANAVA was readmitted as a member of the world body. The National President of SANAVA, Anton Loubser, was elected as a member of the Executive Committee, together with representatives from the Peoples Republic of China, Japan, Kuwait, Sweden, Norway, France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico and Mauritius.
National President’s annual report 2008

The Association experienced a gradual growth in its membership, whilst consolidating its financial position and increasing its activities with regard to development projects and international involvement. At national level, SANAVA’s autonomous branches and affiliated organisations were as active as ever in furthering the Association’s major objective, that of promoting the visual arts in its widest context, always within the scope as allowed by the means at their disposal.

The Trinity Session is strongly defined by its exchanges with Johannesburg, in relation to Africa and similar developed / developing world contexts. This position determines their attitude to local and global debates, networks and partnerships with a view to the survival and sustainability of the visual arts industries.

By acting as correspondents and consultants, and approaching the work process from a network and accommodation / exchange of information angle, the purpose of their working dynamic is to produce in a cross-platform multidisciplinary way with artists, institutions, brands and service providers.

Current key processes are focused on urban regeneration through public art, creativity as commodity through consultation processes, local industry strategies and development through relationships with cultural neighbours, international art networks and strategic global partnerships. Other recent processes include retail and art experiments and digital art development through digital network building.

Republic / re-publication

Exhibitions, projects and events at The Gallery Premises at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre were managed and curated by The Trinity Session from 2004 until 2008. The shift away from the gallery space to focus more exclusively on public space hails an important new phase in their collaborative artistic explorations. Although by no means newcomers to the environment of public space, The Trinity Session sees the move away from the traditional gallery environment as a move towards refining prior practice insofar as it would allow them to more effectively engage with the “re-publication” of the multi-layered fabric of life that exists in the public sphere of Johannesburg. Apartheid encouraged the privatisation of public space, with the result that works from that era presupposed a non-existing consensus among the users of public space – rendering the work culturally exclusive. The Trinity Session’s work methodology, however, seeks to explore the public as a multi- and inter-cultural collection of representatives of various social groups and mentalities. In terms of their multi-tiered collaborative approach to the relationship between art and the community, they seek to build a platform of interaction between artists and society that can give rise to democratic expression in public space. Their aim is not merely to create art in relation to urban development in the City of Johannesburg, but to challenge preconceived relationships between the artist and the public and to explore the networks that arise between art and the public space. The move also reflects a more focused integration of their personal artistic interests, as the public space now becomes aligned with the idea of the public domain in the virtual-community sense of the word. Taking its cue from the definition of the public domain (a space of exchange between different cultures and interests), public space – through the implementation of art – could now become a domain of exchange in its own right.

The Trinity Session has contributed to teaching programmes at institutions, including the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, Vega School of Brand Communications and the International School of New Media (DE), and has published and consulted widely. Publications include the Taxi and Fresh series’ (artists’ monographs), Fine Art Forum, Tester and Leonardo (among others), as well as various exhibition catalogues and journals. Consultation, research, presentation and workshops have included various technology companies, the advertising industry, developmental organisations and international networks. These include Spier, Moyo, Red Bull, MTN, Cell C, International Labour Organisation, UNESCO and TBWA, among others.

Red Marker A Look Away
A Look Away magazine is a high quality, quarterly magazine that focuses on supporting both well known and upcoming South African fine artists, designers, architects, poets, musicians and performance artists.

Through it we aim to unpretentiously bridge the gap between the art world and its eager public by providing pertinent information and discussions on the state of South African art and culture.

The magazine was started in 2005 and has grown to be a great success, promoting the arts and reaching a wide and eclectic audience.

The magazine strives to cover all South African art-forms and accepts contributions from all over the country. Artists are invited to make use of this platform to generate interest and increase exposure for their work.

As it is a submissions-based magazine, every issue is fresh and unique.

The articles range from very accessible features on highly acclaimed and established artists, to more academic articles by younger artists, architects and designers. We feature interviews with musicians, young actors and directors, and review important, as well as obscure arts festivals and exhibitions (anything really, as long as it is cultural and South African).

All in all A Look Away is an enjoyable read for anyone who is involved in the art scene or even for people who are only remotely interested in South African arts and culture.

A Look Away has made itself indespensible to the South African arts world and has contributed to the industry in a unique and refreshing way.

Founded in 1925, the Fine Arts department of the University of Cape Town is better known as the Michaelis School of Fine Art, and has a long and proud tradition of producing outstanding graduates. Today Michaelis is staffed by some of South Africa's leading fine artists, printmakers, sculptors and photographers. Special recognition is given to the School's place in Africa, and the School strives to provide a stimulating and supportive environment in which both undergraduate and postgraduate students can achieve their full potential. During their studies students have access to an impressive range of resources and facilities and Michaelis's location on UCT's Hiddingh Campus - adjacent to the Cape Town Company Gardens - ensures that students have access to many cultural institutions and heritage resources. These include the South African National Gallery and the South African Museum, as well as some of the country's leading commercial art galleries and creative hubs. The School houses the Michaelis Gallery at which visitors to the campus can view regular exhibitions by local and international artists. It also hosts an annual end-of-the-year exhibition of fourth-year student works, which has become a highlight of the local arts calendar.

The Department of Visual Art, previously named Fine Art, has entered a challenging new era: within a new comprehensive university architecture, which builds on the foundation of skills and knowledge for the visual arts industries; within our new home on the Bunting Road Campus in Auckland Park; and within the challenges facing the Higher Education sector today.  At no time in the past has there been such a growing need for strong and sound literacy’s within visual culture and identity. The Department, in realising this need, has developed its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to support and facilitate a passionate and articulate voice in both the students' work and lives.
Further, in an effort to enhance its offering to students, the staff is encouraged to promote a healthy environment of critical debate, research and art creation within national and international contemporary studio practice. Our students are taught to develop their technical, conceptual and communication skills in order to forge a career within the diverse visual arts industries.

An education in Fine Arts contributes to the development of a student’s creativity, imagination, innovative thinking, critical ability and visual literacy. A wide variety of career possibilities await the graduate, primarily in the worlds of art, advertising, museums and education.
Both B.A. (Fine Art) and Diploma courses involve the following disciplines: Drawing; History of Art; Painting; Printmaking; and Sculpture. An additional mandatory subsidiary subject (such as a language) can be completed within the first two years of study. For those students wishing to incorporate alternative or new media in the arts, a multi-disciplinary approach is available in the senior years of study. The Department’s has well-equipped studios where students are taught by practicing artists who are expected to participate and excel at local, national and international levels.

The Department of Visual Arts occupies an historic, fully renovated building in oak-lined Victoria Street. With a new look unveiled in 2005, we offer custom-designed studio and workshop spaces for study streams in Fine Arts, Visual Communication Design and Jewellery Design, including an industry-standard new media computer lab. In keeping with developments in contemporary art and design, the department's ethos is multidisciplinary, supporting students working in all aspects of new media, including video and digital arts, as well as offering a solid foundation in traditional visual and applied arts practices.

It is the mission of the Department of Art History and Visual Arts to make education in the visual arts accessible to all who have fulfilled the entrance requirements of the University.
We take cognisance of the cultural diversity and needs of our students within a dynamic and democratic society.
We aim to promote visual awareness and nurture creative and critical skills, committing ourselves to attain high standards and to strive to be of service to the community.
Our teaching policy does not assume that students come to us to gain access to some form of universal 'knowledge' and 'truth'. We believe that education is negotiated between the student and the university. Students bring their own reality; their own structures of knowledge and truth, formulated by their own specific cultural, social, political and economic experiences and perspectives.
We, on the other hand, provide the student with a course structure that attempts to allow all students to grow and realise their potential, while offering our skills, expertise and experiences in the making, understanding and promotion of visual art in the spirit of the University's stated aim of pursuing free, open and critical scholarship.

Red Marker NATIONAL LOTTERY DISTRIBUTION TRUST FUND (NLDTF)
The Lotteries Act prescribes the establishment of the NLDTF, which is to be managed by the National Lotteries Board. The Act further requires the Board to annually table a report in Parliament in respect of the Fund.

Each week Uthingo Management, the licensed operator of the National Lottery, transfers funds generated for good causes to the NLDTF. This amount is calculated using a pre-determined formula based on ticket sales in terms of the Licence to Operate the National Lottery. Contributions to good causes, based on ticket sales, start at 10.16% and rise up to a high of 40.58%. Over the 7-year Licence period, an average of 30% of the proceeds after VAT will be contributed to Good Causes.

Funds in the NLDTF, together with the interest accumulated, will be used for the purposes as stipulated in section 26 of the Lotteries Act.
The financial year of the National Lotteries Board and the NLDTF runs from 01 April to 31 March. Funds generated for good causes in a particular financial year are available for distribution in the following year.

BENEFICIARIES OF GOOD CAUSE MONIES

The Lotteries Act identifies as beneficiaries of funds accumulated for good causes, the following five broad categories:

  • Reconstruction and Development Programme
  • Charities
  • Arts, Culture and National Heritage
  • Sport and Recreation
  • Miscellaneous Purposes

In terms of Regulations promulgated on 31 May 2002 in Government Gazette No. 23465, the funds in the NLDTF allocated for good causes will be distributed as follows:

Reconstruction and Development Programme: 0%
Charities: 45%
Arts, Culture and National Heritage: 28%

Red Marker Pro Helvetia Cape Town
The liaison office of the Swiss Arts Council in Southern Africa

Pro Helvetia Cape Town is one of the Pro Helvetia representations abroad, set up at the beginning of 1998, and the second base on the African continent besides Cairo. Although Pro Helvetia Cape Town has its office in the heart of Cape Town, it is set up with the characteristics of a mobile office to cover the whole of Southern Africa.

Being physically linked with the Consulate of Switzerland, by having an office space on its premises, Pro Helvetia Cape Town cooperates closely with the Swiss diplomatic representations in Southern Africa. The office in Cape Town contains a small library on Swiss and Southern African cultures, which is available to the public in office hours.

Pro Helvetia Cape Town reaches out to most countries in the Southern African region, coordinating projects not only in South Africa but also in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Angola. Fostering cultural interaction between these countries and Switzerland is one of Pro Helvetia’s priorities.
Through a mandate with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Pretoria, the office in Cape Town also supports local capacity building and encourages cultural interaction between Southern African countries.

The activities granted support are projects initiated by young professionals, conceived and executed locally through partnerships with venues and institutions in the region.

Red Marker Goethe Institute Johannesburg
The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach.

We promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation. We convey a comprehensive picture of Germany by providing information on Germany's cultural, social and political life.

Through our network of Goethe-Institutes, Goethe Centres, cultural societies and reading rooms, alongside our examination and language learning centres, we perform the principal tasks of cultural and educational policy abroad. We work in partnership with public and private cultural bodies, the German federal states and municipalities, and the corporate sector.

We draw on the rich variety of our many-faceted open society and Germany's lively culture. We combine the experiences and conceptions of our partners in Germany and abroad with our professional skills and engage in a dialogue rooted in partnership. In doing so, we function as service providers and partners for everyone taking an active interest in Germany and the German language and culture, and act independently with no political affiliations.

We face the cultural policy challenges of globalisation and develop innovative concepts for a world made more human through mutual understanding, where cultural diversity is seen as an asset.

The Goethe Institute in Johannesburg regulates the work in the Sub-Saharan countries including 11 institutes and 14 Goethe reading/cultural centers. In addition we work together with German embassies in countries where Goethe is not represented.

Due to South Africa´s history of racial discrimination our focus is particularly on the development of and envolvement with previously disadvantaged groups of the population. Thus, seminars and work-shops are in the lime light of our program.

Our Language department offers German lessons in the Goethe-Institut and otherwise. It supports German teachers in the country and works closely together with the department of education.

Our department of "Library and Information" works in close relation with the Library and Information Association of South Africa and encourages information exchange with German Organisations. Our information Center has a braod variety of information on Germany available.

Red Marker South African National Gallery
National Museum . Research . Education . Collection
The South African National Gallery is adjacent to Parliament, in the picturesque Company Gardens in the middle of the Cape Town CBD. The collection was built on a series of bequests in the 2nd half of the nineteenth century. The current gallery building was completed in 1930, and the houses an extensive collection of South African, African, British, French, Dutch and Flemish art. Its acquisitions policy now focuses strongly on the collecting of significant contemporary art from South Africa, and “since 1990 one of the major tasks has been to establish a collection that acknowledges and celebrates the expressive cultures of the African continent, particularly its southern regions”.

A comprehensive database contains information on the artists and works in the permanent collection and over the years a series of excellent catalogues has been published. Selections from the permanent collection change regularly and temporary exhibitions of paintings, works on paper, photography, new media, sculpture, beadwork and textiles are hosted. They provide insight into the range of aesthetic production in South Africa, the African continent and further a field.

A Word of Art aims to create art projects and experiences rather then white-wall gallery shows and has a programme of exhibitions, artists-in-residence and public art projects. The project is engaged with “a mix of street art, graffiti art, underground art, popular art, modern art and contemporary art. Internationally this movement is described as “New brow”, an evolution of “Low brow”, as it is claimed that it is not low and it is not high, it’s simply just new”.

A Word of Art is located in the Woodstock Industrial Building, and has been working closely with the landlord to develop the building as a creative hub. This 60 year old industrial building situated in the heart of Woodstock – Cape Town’s emerging creative precinct – is now the home to a diverse mix of artists, designers and photographers, alongside factory’s carpenters and bakeries. The building aims to support artist’s needs and help toward the development of the Woodstock area, and a creative Cape Town.

A Word of Art is also behind the Write on Africa project, an initiative that mobilises creativity for inspiration, social change and urban rejuvenation, focused on children and youth.

Red Marker Dala
International exchange . Residency . Public Art . Workshops

Dala (‘to make/create’ in isiZulu) is an interdisciplinary creative collective that believes in the transformative role of creativity in building safer and more liveable cities. Dala emerged as a response to the growing need for a sustainable space for creative practitioners actively engaging in the production of art/architecture for social change in eThekwini (Durban). Dala facilitates creative initiatives between practitioners from a variety of backgrounds (artists, architects, researchers, performers, urban planners, designers), the municipality and most importantly the people and organisations that live and work within and around the city. Dala’s initiatives all revolve around re-imagining the use and expression in and of public space. Founders, Doung Jahangeer, Rike Sitas and Nontobeko Ntombela have been working on similar initiatives individually and collectively for close to ten years. All three are practicing artists and educators who have been involved in a number of local and international projects and exhibitions.

Red Marker Fractal
Project Space . Collective . Events . Emerging Artists
Fractal originated as a result of younger artists finding it increasingly difficult to make a living from the arts. The idea developed to try to promote the arts among the young people of Bloemfontein, and to involve them in productions, workshops and exhibitions. One of the collective’s aims is to educate the general public and thus awake in them the desire to preserve our national art museums, and the project enjoys a close relationship with the Oliewenhuis Museum in Bloemfontein.
