Red Marker Durban University of Technology Gallery
The Durban University of Technology Gallery is located in Durban, on the Steve Biko Campus in the Cecil Renaud Theatre above the Library. It is a space dedicated to the displaying of all visual arts. It serves as a support department for the Art and Design Departments in the Faculty of Arts. The gallery’s main objective is to educate, research and serve the art community using visual art as its primary tool.

Permanent Collection

The DUT Gallery is the University’s cultural base that is dedicated to collecting, documenting and conserving art. Since 1982 the gallery has collected current and historical art that includes ancient and modern artefacts. The university’s collection includes anonymous carvings, clay pots, beadwork, wooden and bronze sculptures, contemporary paintings, mixed media and art installations.

The collection has become a historical reference that encompasses cultural diversity whilst encouraging continuity in research, teaching and promotion of the visual arts within the student body and society at large. The collection continues to grow through donations and purchases that have relevance to current commentary.

Exhibitions

The gallery is also dedicated to serving and promoting practicing artists though the mounting of exhibitions. It promotes visual art through various activities that include exhibitions, seminars and networking. Exhibitions rotate regularly; these exhibitions vary from established artists, students, and community projects. An exhibitions programme is formulated annually, encompassing traveling, curated and sourced shows. Artists are invited to exhibit and proposals are evaluated in accordance with the gallery’s core aims and values.

Red Marker KZNSA Gallery
Established over a century ago The Natal Society of Arts Gallery, in the suburb of Glenwood, is currently Kwazulu Natal’s leading gallery for contemporary visual culture. Housed in a building designed by an award winning architect, the gallery hosts regular exhibitions of artists of national and international repute.

There are five exhibition spaces in total each devoted to a specific artistic form. The Main and Mezzanine Galleries focus on contemporary art, The Nivea Gallery promotes up and coming artists, The Electric Gallery is a multimedia and audiovisual space for exhibitions of installations and new media, and is also home to the prestigious Young Artist Project. There is also a gift shop selling authentic craft, books, and various items of jewelry and homeware, the Arts Café, serving light meals and coffee. The Durban Centre for Photography is also located in the gallery, and they offer regular workshops, lectures, and dark room access.

artSPACE Durban is an initiative in Durban, South Africa that opened its doors in 2003. The gallery is located in a warehouse in a light industrial area of Durban, South Africa. There are three galleries to exhibit in and on the floor above are artists studio spaces to rent.
aSd offers a professional artist's agency function focused on networking, collaborative commissions and large-scale public and private sector partnerships and projects.
aSd offers exhibitions, marketing, sales promotion and venue hire facilities to both artists and those interested in developing the contemporary visual arts by way of acquisitions or project development. aSd aims to actively and proactively service (and create) initiatives in new media and techniques, and aims to connect with social change and identity programs
artSPACE has a second gallery in Berlin, Germany, to provide artists with a platform on which to exhibit their work and reach a wider audience in Europe.

Red Marker The African Art Centre
Focus Areas: Retail, Workshops, Development.

 

The African Art Centre was established under the auspices of the S.A. Institute of Race Relations since 1959, it became an autonomous non-profit organization in 1982 and from small beginnings, has a well established reputation for taking KwaZulu-Natal black artists and craftspeople seriously and promoting their work and careers. The Centre is consulted by Public Galleries, Educational Institutions and the public, for information on artists/craftspeople and projects.
 The Centre is one of the main sources from which provincial, national and international art collections, private and public, purchase for their respective collections.

The BAT Centre is an art development and community center located within the small Craft Harbour off Durban’s Victoria Embankment. It contains a number of retail outlets, a restaurant, bar and large hall fitted with sound and lighting equipment. There are large art studios, a number of exhibition galleries, music practice rooms, a dance studio, resource center and a conference room. A computer shop, repair and training service and offices for independent arts organizations complete the picture.
